After School Teachers will work with the Site Coordinator, School Principals and School Day Staff on setting academic goals that reflect program and district objectives for all students enrolled in the after school program. After School Teachers are responsible for providing and monitoring programming designed to increase state and local test scores in reading and math. Teachers are positive, professional and work to the best of their ability during the after school hours. Hours vary by each school site.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cooperate with school staff and Site Coordinator regarding academic curriculum and information.
  • Plan, implement and assist in high-quality educational activities for participants for an average of 10-15 hours a week during the program year
  • Provide, deliver and engage students in the after school program with a planned academic curriculum
  • Set rules and expectations with students
  • Provide and maintain a learning environment that is safe, comfortable and encourages learning
  • Monitor the alignment of curriculum goals and objectives with the academic segment of the after school program
  • Provide alternative activities, worksheets, projects and tasks for students to choose from it they complete their work before the end of program.
  • Track academic progress of enrolled students including homework, behavior and grades
  • Communicate any needs, issues or positive feedback to the Site Coordinator in a timely manner so that any needs or student behavior (good or bad) can be addressed and dealt with in a timely manner.
  • Schedule and assigned duties are subject to change based on the needs of the program and the clients we serve.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Must have knowledge of academic objectives and program goals in the Building Brighter Futures After School program.
  • Must have adequate knowledge of the BPS curriculum.
  • Must have a demonstrated record of effective academic results with academically challenged students.
  • Must possess a recognized interest in developing authentic and meaningful professional relationships with youth who struggle academically.
  • Must possess a demonstrated record of improved academic results for students in their current assignment.
  • Must be willing to work with the lowest 50% of the student population.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES UNIQUE TO THIS POSITION:

  • Must be available to work between the hours of 2:00PM to 6:00PM dependent of location
  • Non-building staff members typically arrive 30-60 minutes before the after school program begins (Program hours vary by each school site)

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in Child Development, education, human services or a related field; masters preferred
  • New York State Teacher certification preferred
  • Two years direct experience working with children preferably in an educational setting.
  • Pay is commensurate with education and licensing/certifications.
