Registered Nurse - Float

Job Title:  Float Registered Nurse

Reports To: Director of Health Integration 

FLSA Status: Exempt 

Notice: 4 weeks

Grade: 9


Responsible for all professional nursing duties as required.  Enforces policy regarding storage and inventory of sample medications, use of sharps containers, and medical waste management.  Provides group and individual treatment.  Develops treatment plans based on comprehensive assessments, and formulates a diagnostic impression.  Adheres to basic standards of nursing in conjunction with all NYS licensing standards. Floats between BBH clinics to provide nursing care as assigned by the Supervisor.


·  Maintains, prepares, and dispenses the medications in compliance with NYS regulations.

·  Provides injectable medications to consumers in and outside of the clinic environment.

·  Oversees blood screenings when determined necessary, and monitors for therapeutic ranges.

·  Conducts health monitoring quarterly for program recipients to include:

-  Adult, Children, Adolescent BMI screening

-  Generic Health Monitoring (BP, P, R, Temp, etc)

-  Tobacco use screening and smoking cessation counseling

-  Assures communicable disease risk assessments is done on all admitted consumers

-  Other assessments as assigned

·  Assists and recommends medical follow-up for individuals who have not had a physical exam within one year, assessment for need of physical exam and assists with scheduling of physical exam by CCBHC medical provider.

·  Provides age appropriate medical screening and preventive interventions to adults and older adults.

·  Requests prior authorizations for medications.

·  Coordinates all pharmacy, psychiatrist and consumer medication needs.

·  Assists in linkage to PCP, Health Home, or other community resources.

·  Works closely with staff consulting psychiatrists or providers.

·  May supervise student interns.

·  Maintains inventory of on-site store medications in compliance with NYS OMH regulations.

·  Properly disposes of medical waste in compliance with NYS OMH standards.

·  Provides nursing-related services in the community and the consumer's own milieu.

·  Any duties or tasks assigned by Supervisor.

·  Schedule and assigned duties are subject to change based on the needs of the program and the clients we serve.


·  Maintains good daily communication with teammates and the prescriber.

  • Demonstrates good listening skills with the ability to accept a consumer where he or she is at without imposing values.
  • Able to provide psychiatric and medical education to client, teammates, and family members.
  • Able to make sound decision and use resources independently and appropriately.
  • Able to recognize and manage client crises.
  • Drive program vehicles to include mobile RV and agency car.


·  The Float R.N. has a bachelor's degree in Nursing and relevant credentials (i.e., R.N.),  current NYS licensure as a Registered Nurse, and a minimum of two years' experience as a professional nurse with at least one year's experience working within a substance use, mental health setting.


  • A valid NYS drivers' license.
  • Automobile in good working order.
  • Must have Accredited NYS Defensive driving course; or obtain within 15 days of hire.
  • Must maintain Active NYS Defensive Driving class every 3 years, upon expiration.
  • If driving one's own vehicle, must maintain valid inspection and automobile insurance.
  • Must provide proof of insurance upon hire and when requested.
