Life Skills Coach

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Starting Range: $18.50

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

The Life Skills Coach provides intensive in-home services that teach independent living skills to housed participants. The goal is to provide services and supports that will help the individual to achieve and maintain community stability through teaching and reinforcement of independent living skills, identifying and using other resources in the community, and monitoring of health and nutrition.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Engage with individuals that are newly housed.
  • Provide education and skill building assistance across multiple activities of daily living including but limited to maintaining personal hygiene, maintenance of the living environment, laundry, money management, food preparation, nutrition, shopping, community integration, and wellness activities.
  • Work as an integral part of the housing team; maintain open communication with all clients as well as internal and external team members regarding progress, needs, and goal planning.
  • Ensure excellent client care with creative service delivery and planning.
  • Maintain updated knowledge of local services and resources that are available to clients.
  • Develop training tools and techniques in coordination with housing specialists to address client needs.
  • Maintain timely & accurate documentation regarding services provided.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings.
  • Completes all trainings required by the agency.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience in human services and/or housing.
  • Experience working with persons experiencing homelessness and housing instability.
  • Strong understanding of activities daily living (ADL) skills and the challenges faced by homeless individuals.
  • Knowledge of local social services and other resources available to homeless clients.
  • Able to effectively use resources to work well both independently and collaboratively.
  • Excellent time management & organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teaching skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrates good listening skills with the ability to accept a consumer where he or she is at without imposing values.
  • Able to recognize and appropriately manage client crises.
  • Basic computer skills for record-keeping and communication purposes.
  • Must be able to lift at least 20 pounds, bend, squat, and kneel at times.
  • Ability to work evenings or weekends as needed.
  • Valid NYS Driver's License.
  • Must have accredited NYS Defensive Driving course; or obtain within 15 days of hire and send certification of completion to Human Resources.
  • Must maintain active NYS Defensive Driving course every 3 years and send a copy of the new certification of completion upon expiration.
  • Must maintain valid vehicle inspection, registration, and insurance cards and send updated copies to Human Resources upon expiration.
