Controller

FLSA Status: Exempt

Starting rate: $100,000 per year


The Controller will be strategic advisor and collaborator as a member of the agency's Senior Management team, whose role is to manage all day-to-day accounting functions of BestSelf Behavioral Health and related companies.  Areas of oversight on the Accounting & Finance team include accounts payable, general ledger, grant vouchering and reporting, financial reporting, budget development and monitoring, and audit planning and preparation. This role is crucial to ensuring cost effective operations, budget management, and the overall success of the financial components within our Behavioral Health practice. The Controller will work closely with other support teams and program leadership within the agency and will apply the components of our leadership philosophy to foster a culture of growth and support for the agency's mission.

·  The ideal candidate will have experience that demonstrates they can build, develop, and retain an effective team of accounting staff in alignment with the agency's leadership philosophy. This includes aligning the duties of the individuals on the team to utilize their talents effectively and efficiently and supporting and developing them to advance their skill sets.

·  They will be an effective communicator and coach to all members of the accounting team. They will build positive working relationships with all team members, and effectively communicate how each role interacts with other roles on the team and throughout the agency.

Expertise in creating, implementing, and promoting efficient processes

·  The Controller will have a profound understanding of all accounting and finance practices and requirements, preferably as it relates to the non-profit health and human services industry.

·  They will analyze existing accounting processes, procedures, regular reporting, and budget development processes to identify and implement new efficiencies and controls that will provide potential cost savings.

·  They will lead process improvements and develop educational materials to equip accounting staff with sufficient knowledge and skills to provide excellent inter-departmental support.  

Job duties

·  Manage and review the activities of accounting staff including accounts payable functions, cash receipts and banking activities, and month end close.

·  Manage and/or assist with all aspects of financial reporting, including but not limited to all regular, internal reports and all externally requested reports.

·  Oversee the preparation of all monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports relating to agency grants and contracts as required by funding sources (e.g.: OMH, ECDMH, OASAS, SAMHSA, HUD, NYSED etc.).

·  Coordinate the agency's annual budget development process and the ongoing progress monitoring of the budget.

·  Assist in the preparation and completion of the annual financial statement, UGG, and 401k Plan audits as well as the Consolidated Fiscal Report (CFR).

·  Assist in the oversight of the administration of the agency's 401k plan.

·  Create and update accounting policies and procedures as needed and to maximize efficiencies and controls.

·  Maintain all necessary internal control and other standard accounting practices.

·  Schedule and assigned duties are subject to change based on the needs of organization.

 

Required knowledge, experience, and skills 

·  Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in accounting

·  Minimum of two years in an accounting related supervisory and/or management capacity

·  CPA license preferred

·  Knowledge of not-for-profit accounting and deficit funding reporting preferred.

·  Knowledge of the principles and practices of accounting and generally accepted accounting practices.

·  Knowledge of budget development and monitoring.

·  Knowledge of computerized accounting and data management systems.

·  Knowledge of financial management and controls.

·  Ability to work successfully in a fast paced environment as well as multi-task efficiently.

·  Ability to maintain effective relationships with all levels of employees.

·  Must have excellent communication skills.
