Housing Navigator

Pay rate: $24.18

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

SUMMARY OF DUTIES

The Housing Navigator will have strong engagement and motivating skills. The housing navigator will link program participants with housing of their choice. The navigator will interface with landlords, accompany program participants to housing related appointments, assist participants throughout the housing search as well as the move in process. The navigator will conduct the housing quality inspections prior to move in and arrange furniture delivery. The navigator will then link the participant to a housing specialist for ongoing support.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Engage with individuals experiencing homelessness in various locations, including city streets, shelters, and community partners.
  • Landlord/property management outreach and relationship building.
  • Develop rapport and communication with both property managers and participants experiencing homelessness.
  • Regular coordination with Program Director and Housing Specialists, including attending collaborative meetings.
  • Conduct comprehensive housing assessments, housing planning and client-driven housing searches based on the individual clients' needs.
  • Accompany clients in housing search and outreach to available housing options.
  • Act as client advocate in securing appropriate housing.
  • Conducts all Housing Quality Inspections
  • Collect all necessary documentation needed to assist with housing location.
  • Identify housing options for program participants to include maintenance of a running list of current and upcoming housing options.
  • Extensive record keeping, data entry and documentation of services.
  • Run monthly new tenant groups to review tenant rights and responsibilities, review of lease agreements, and other related topics.to educate clients on housing search processes, budgeting, and maintaining a healthy living envirnoment
  • Keep current with landlord laws, ordinances, and regulations that impact housing.
  • Attend trainings, workshops, seminars, community events and conferences related to this position.
  • Responsible for maintaining confidential, professional boundaries with all clients.
  • Maintains good daily communication with clients, teammates, landlords, and service providers
  • Completes all trainings required by the agency.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelors degree in human service field and 2 years of experience working in a human service capacity and/or mental health field -OR- Associates Degree in human service field and 4 years of experience working in a human service capacity and/or mental health field -OR- High school diploma or equivalency and 8 years of experience working in a human service capacity and/or mental health field
  • Experience working with persons experiencing homelessness and housing instability, and/or have had experience in foster care, probation, mental health systems preferred.
  • Reliable, flexible team player who works effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, and to meet deadlines.
  • Proficient in the full Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel, Word, and Outlook)
  • Has good organizational skills.
  • Demonstrates good listening skills with the ability to accept a consumer where he or she is at without imposing values.
  • Able to recognize and manage client crises appropriately and timely.
  • Is able to be creative with service delivery and planning.
  • Valid NYS Driver's License.
  • Must have accredited NYS Defensive Driving course; or obtain within 15 days of hire and send certification of completion to Human Resources.
  • Must maintain active NYS Defensive Driving course every 3 years and send a copy of the new certification of completion upon expiration.
  • Must maintain valid vehicle inspection, registration, and insurance cards and send updated copies to Human Resources upon expiration.
